This #CineTVLatino2025-Nashvile session will feature a special conversation with Mexican American author Angela Cervantes, celebrated for her engaging children’s novels that bring rich cultural narratives to young readers. Known for books like Lety Out Loud, a 2020 Pura Belpré Honor Book, and the American Girl story Maritza: Lead with Your Heart, Angela’s storytelling shines with warmth, adventure, and insights into identity and heritage. Her latest release, The Cursed Moon, marks her debut into children’s horror, adding a thrilling new dimension to her acclaimed work.
Angela has also authored junior novelizations of beloved Disney/Pixar films Coco and Encanto, bringing the magic of these stories to young readers worldwide. In this presentation, Angela will share her journey as an author, her inspirations drawn from her Mexican American heritage, and her dedication to representing Latinx stories in children’s literature.

Pancho Rodríguez is a Mexican writer, actor, producer, and director with over 30 years of experience across diverse platforms, including circus, cabaret, theater, literature, animation, and film. He studied film at CIEC (1990-1991) and the Department of Television and Video at UDG (1993-1994). He began his career writing scripts for videohomes (1998-2000) and directed two 16mm feature films: Balas Salvajes (1999) and Ulises y la Puerta de los Titanes (2000). Rodríguez furthered his education by attending screenwriting seminars with Syd Field (1999) and Guillermo Arriaga (2003).
In 2003, he co-founded KARMA FILMS, focusing on advertising. His most notable works include Día de Muertos and Llamando a un Ángel.
In 2020, he won IMCINE’s grant for fiction scriptwriting with Alba. His latest feature, Abracadáver, a black comedy, was released in October 2024 on Hulu in North America.

He attended the University of Guadalajara and majored in psychology.

You know that grandmothers and aunts made the prom dresses for all the kids. But I started making prom dresses that were pretty expensive, and all the girls said, 'Mommy I don't want you to make my prom dress. I want Manuel to make my prom dress!' I continued making prom dresses and in one year I made 77 dresses, then the next year I made 110, and from then on I hired people to help me sew. I made a fortune."

His projects include Emmy-nominated collaborations with KGV Studios, international tour videography with top 40 artists like Mike Posner, and producing feature-length documentaries and short films like “Devon’s Forest,” which centers on the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women.
As a co-founder of IndigeNash - Nashville’s first-ever multimedia arts agency dedicated to celebrating Indigenous creativity, storytelling, and advocacy - Jeffrey is heading up the Comedy, Film, and Wellness programming as well as assisting in marketing for this new one-of-a-kind collective. He’s especially passionate about uplifting Native talents as a vital form of cultural storytelling and resilience.

- Albert Bender, Lawyer/Journalist: Bender is a Cherokee historian, writer, and attorney dedicated to preserving and advocating for Native American cultural and legal rights. As Chairperson of the Indigenous Peoples Coalition, he brings a vital historical lens to discussions around Indigenous narratives and representation, particularly within Tennessee’s media landscape. Bender is deeply involved in issues of Indigenous sovereignty, land restoration, and the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), often serving as a consulting attorney on these subjects. He is currently working on a legal treatise about Native American sovereignty and authoring a book on U.S. war crimes against the Maya people during the Guatemalan civil war. Through his work,

Shawn Anfinson is Managing Senior Producer at Nashville PBS. Since arriving at the station in 2013, he has produced documentary content for various projects including American Graduate, Veterans Coming Home, Aging Matters, and Next Door Neighbors. His 2023 Arts Break, featuring Day of the Dead artist, Jose Vera, won a Public Media Award, while episodes of Next Door Neighbors, including Taste of Home and Peace of Mind, were each nominated for Mid-South Regional Emmy Awards. It’s through Next Door Neighbors that Nashville PBS has been able to learn from our city’s refugees and immigrants and explore the rich diversity of people now calling Nashville home.
