About Fernando Alday:
“Old paper and medieval ink are fundamental to my paintings. The process begins with the almost archaeological search for paper, colour and textures. I am passionate about paper and its use as a material to depict the passing of time and convey the ever present and fleeting nature of life’s cycle.”
Fernando Alday was born in Santiago de Chile in 1959 and he has lived in Barcelona during 20 years. He has had a long artistic career with exhibitions in Europe and Unit States. He has given exhibitions in galleries all around the country and abroad.
Of special importance is the exhibition he gave in 2000 at the Malborough Gallery in Santiago de Chile and the exhibitions at the Barcelona Artur Ramon Galley and Jordi Barnadas. He has also participated at European Art Fairs like St'art (Strasburg) and Miart (Milan), Art Karlsruhe (Germany), Art Bodensee ( Austria) , Art Fair Cologne (Germany)…
Through collages, Fernando Alday seeks to show the passing of time. The old documents and personal letters that he uses to express the importance of history in his work. Private and small stories become a part of the great art history. Fernando Alday conscientiously uses this precious material and creates contemporary works of art, with strong symbolic components.

A Masterful Journey Through European and Colonial Treasures: La Suite Brings an Unprecedented Exhibit to the Schermerhorn Symphony Center
The renowned La Suite Subastas and Art Gallery from Barcelona, Spain, is bringing an extraordinary collection of art to Nashville, offering a blend of romantic, medieval, Gothic, Baroque, Neohispanic, modern, and contemporary masterpieces.
This exceptional exhibit, taking place at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center from December 2 to 13, is presented with the support of the Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (NAHCC). It features a groundbreaking display of European and colonial art, including medieval and Baroque sculptures, Spanish furniture from the 16th and 17th centuries, European silverwork, and paintings from various renowned schools. Also showcased is a significant collection of Mexican and Andean colonial art, complemented by a selection of modern and contemporary pieces.
One of the standout works is the Genealogy of the Fourteen Inca Kings and Francisco Pizarro (18th century, Viceregal school), a rare set of fifteen oil-on-canvas paintings in excellent condition. This series uniquely intertwines the legacy of the Inca rulers with the arrival of the Spanish conquistador, offering a profound reflection on the intersection of pre-colonial and colonial history. Comparable to pieces in institutions like the Denver Museum and the Brooklyn Museum, these works provide a rare glimpse into the complexities of this era.
Other highlights include Gothic masterpieces such as a Virgin and Child (Sedes Sapientiae), a 14th-century polychrome wood carving likely of German origin, and a 12th-century Spanish sculpture of the Virgin of the Annunciation. Another notable piece is a Baroque painting on copper of Our Lady of Silence, attributed to the Italian artist Angelino Medoro, framed in 18th-century repoussé silverwork.
Additionally, the collection includes select sacred art and Spanish furniture from the medieval and Baroque periods, such as ornate desks and tables. Two exceptional 18th-century Mexican depictions of the Virgin of Guadalupe, one featuring an exquisite repoussé silver frame, are among the colonial masterpieces on display.
Decorative French Art Deco objects, 18th-century English silver candelabras, and 16th-century Nuremberg gilded plates enrich this journey through art history. These historical treasures are complemented by works from 20th- and 21st-century European and American artists, creating a comprehensive and dynamic exhibit.
This first-of-its-kind event in Nashville celebrates cultural and artistic heritage with the support of the Nashville Symphony and the Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. The NAHCC's involvement underscores its commitment to promoting cultural understanding and preserving the legacy of Hispanic contributions to the arts.
Visitors to the exhibit will have the opportunity to explore a curated collection that bridges the past and the present, offering a rare glimpse into the interplay of European and colonial artistry.
