NAHCC Kicks-Off Hispanic Heritage Month with Special Programs, new partnerships, Hispanic art in the community project and call for business awards nominations
NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - Monday, September 15, 2014 --The Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will mark the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month with special announcements of new partnerships in business and education, a Hispanic art in the community project, discussion panels, roundtables, art, music, and networking events.
Hispanic Heritage Month is a nation-wide celebration of the many contributions to our nation, by those who trace their roots to Spanish speaking countries. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.
Highlights of this year's local Hispanic Heritage Month celebration include the Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce's In addition to the partnership we just announced with Belmont University to help increase the number of Hispanic students in Executive Education programs, we are taking 8 Hispanic entrepreneurs for a two-day training in personal branding offered by the University of Notre Dame in Salt Lake City, all of them on a scholarship we were able to secure.
We continue our partnership with music rights management leader BMI to present “Making Music Happen” at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 23, at BMI’s office on Music Row. This special event will include music industry insights from BMI’s Delia Orjuela (L.A), David Preston (Nashville), each part of the Company’s Writer/Publisher Relations team who work directly with songwriters, composers and publishers and a Latin music exec from New York and Puerto Rico. It will also include time to meet, greet and enjoy an acoustic performance by Latin artists Elsten Torres and Gustavo Galindo. Read HERE about last year's event.
This is geared to highlight that opportunities are within Latin music’s diverse community in Nashville and beyond or songwriters and publishers can navigate, network and thrive creatively in the music community. See from last year.
There will be lots of other activities from financial literacy with industry experts and the Small Business Administration, to art in the community and high school student-business owner mentoring, and the naturally expected immigration talk.
Our Hispanic heritage month will end on October 15 with our traditional Business and Community Awards - now in its 10th year, with the theme of Diversity and Inclusion Best Practices.
In 2013 Tennessee's First Lady Crissy Haslam selected the NAHCC's Heritage Panels to be featured in Conservation Hall as a first time recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month at the Tennessee Residence. This year they will be shown at the Vince Gill Room at Belmont University's Curb Event Center during our kick-off celebration on Sept 15th, 2014
The Heritage Panels were coordinated by the NAHCC through the Glendale Spanish Immersion Elementary School for the 2010 Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. The vibrant and lively paintings by the 3rd Grade art classes were first unveiled by Tennessee's previous Governor Phil Bredesen and First Lady Andrea Conte at The Tennessee State Museum during the Chamber's 6th Annual Hispanic Month Celebration and Business Awards.
To close the month-long festivities the NAHCC will host its 10th Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration and Business and Community Excellence Awards with the them of Diversity & Inclusion Best Practices on Wednesday, October 15, at the offices of WALLER on the 27th floor of the Nashville City Center in Nashville.
