The Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Foundation (NAHCCF) and the Simon Youth Academy at Hickory Hollow, Old Cockrill, and Opry Mills presents "A Part of Me": a multi-media digital storytelling project that is part of a month-long program in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Sep. 15 - Oct. 15 in collaboration with the Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce(NAHCC)
With a population of students representing local and out of state upbringings, the opportunities to learn about and share their inner worlds presents a one-of-a-kind exercise in arts, humanities and community. It is with that spirit that the Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber Foundation has teamed up with the Simon Youth Academy program to work with students from three high-schools in a project themed to "A Part of Me. Honor Our Roots" during Hispanic Heritage Month to further support the exploration of diversity and its unlimited creative visions and opportunities.
This interactive multiple-session class, taught by seasoned media professionals from the network of members, and in partnership with the NAHCC, guided student participants to identify, explore and describe their personal spaces and surroundings while learning how to capture them as seen through the lens of a smart phone camera.
An added dimension to the project involved audio recordings of a descriptive narrative inspired by and focused on the photo essay creative process. An engineering class and a field trip will immerse students into professional broadcasting settings. With guidance from English professors at each participating school, the students are currently producing a short audio component to their final photo project which stands alone as equally powerful to evoke vividly the images that inspired each narrative.
In addition, "Made with Code" by Google Fiber, provided an interactive workshop designed to inspire teens to see that code can help them pursue their passions, whatever they may be. The project will culminate with an opening student artist reception on October 4th from 5:30 to 7:30 -followed by a month-long exhibition, at Flatrock Coffee, Tea and More..., a NAHCC member and without a doubt, true community space "where neighbors come together", located in the heart of South Nashville, one of our city's most diverse neighborhood. Everyone is invited to attend.
Mentors included noted photographer John Partipilo, Greg Welsch/Radio Free Nashville, and film director/writer/producer; Jane Grote/Google Fiber, and Loraine Segovia-Paz, Brenna Davenport-Leigh and Syreeta Blakely on behalf of the NAHCC Foundation Education Committee.
Photography Exhibit: Flatrock coffee, Tea and More... 2640 Nolensville Pike, Suite C, Nashville, TN 37211
